How to reign supreme on Google

Top spot: How to reach number one on Google

Like any business owner worth their salt, you’ve probably heard of the term “SEO”. What you might not be so familiar with is exactly what’s actually involved in search engine optimisation, and why it’s fast becoming the number one marketing tool for your salon, spa or barber shop.

Let’s not get tied up in tech-speak. At the end of the day it’s all just a fancy way of saying “let’s help clients find you on Google”. That’s right, the better your SEO is, the easier you’ll make it for new guests to discover just how amazing you are, via a Google search.

Sounds simple enough, right? Maybe not. If you’re a newbie to all things Google, attracting new clients online is no easy feat. But we’ve got a few simple tips to help get you started.

Be beautiful

Do looks really matter? You bet they do! When it comes to making a great first impression, a beautiful website is an absolute must-have. It’s one of the first things clients will see if they’re thinking about visiting your salon, spa or barber shop – so if it doesn’t reflect all the fabulous things you’re capable of, you’re missing out on new business! Google knows this – so if you can give your site a makeover with visual flow in mind, you’ll be on the way to the top in no time.

Smarten up

So you’ve got the looks, but have you got the smarts? If you don’t make it easy for your clients to find the information they need in a click or two, they will navigate away from your site faster than you can say, “pick me!”. That’s why it’s so important to have an easy-to-navigate site. And don’t forget an easy to spot “book now” button! Because believe it or not, if your clients bounce away from your site often enough, Google will stop you in your tracks from reaching number one.

Go mobile

We’re all mobile-obsessed, and Google is no exception. Nothing is more likely to turn your clients off than a website that doesn’t work on mobile. Your website should be just as good looking and functional on a smart phone or tablet as it is on a desktop computer – if not, more so. Not sure how? Ask your web developer for a helping hand or use one of the many cheap and cheerful mobile-friendly templates that are available (WordPress is our fave).

Get creative

Google adores any shiny new things you can add to your website – in fact, it finds them irresistible. The easiest way to keep your content fresh is to blog as often as you can, providing your clients with extra insights into all the juicy goings-on in your business. If you’re stuck for inspiration, think about the things your clients would be interested in: Q&As with your team, behind the scenes at your latest photo shoot, beauty advice from local celebs, or styling tips from your senior stylists. Your guests – and Google – will love you for it, and you’ll be one step closer to the top spot.
