Grand Openings: Bach Hair

After walking through the door of Bach Hair you feel instantly at home with the apple green walls, timber flooring, the airy warmth and the comfy leather couch All creating the cosiest of settings.

After never returning home to Wales from an Australian backpacking adventure, Peter Hanmer and his wife Lee opened their first salon in Brisbane’s CBD in 1984 after a chance meeting as employees at the same salon. Far from the days of a paper appointment book on a bamboo desk, one telephone, manual credit card imprinting and the oh so 80’s décor fashion of potted palms, they now have two salons in Brisbane, one in Paddington and the recently opened Chelmer salon which as they put it “was meant to be.”

Peter and Lee spent 12 months looking for a location to open their new salon as their existing Paddington salon was running out of room, with not enough chairs on a busy Saturday morning. Finally on the 5th of February this year they signed on the dotted line and the Chelmer salon was theirs, almost. They had to completely gut the existing salon and commence re-plumbing, re-wiring, painting, and decorating... it was a complete transformation. And believe it or not this only took five weeks, not months as you would imagine.

The new salon has the feel of the existing Paddington salon - simple, yet luxurious. To celebrate the opening of the new salon, Peter and Lee hosted a launch party with over 100 friends, clients and the odd celebrity or two. The night was filled with hair transformations from curly to straight, nerdy to funky, and to add to the excitement, they celebrated with pink champagne and hair product giveaways.

So the couple after over 20 years in the industry have reached their goal and no longer chase other peoples’ visions of hairdressing. They have successfully created the type of salons they wanted; a ‘city style’ atmosphere without the intimidation. Bach Hair is a mixture of luxury, warmth, and welcome with an ample dose of intelligence and fun.

Their advertising, staff and style reflect this - to provide exceptional service, ensuring their clients return. They understand the time poor nature of modern women, therefore offering women the luxury of knowing their hair is right and fashionable.

With two successful salons up and running, Peter has become more involved with the hairdressing industry; he is the Queensland Chairman of Intercoiffure and has worked with L’Oréal in product trials and platform work. Peter’s career highlight to date has been a trip to Paris with Intercoiffure for a photo shoot in 2004.

“I love science, sport, hairdressing and fashion. There’s a misconception that hairdressers are only interested in hair and being arty. I’m a no fuss fashion person. I love hairdressing and can’t ever imagine not being in this industry. Outside the salon people say I don’t fit the hairdresser mould but it’s in the salon I am most comfortable and happy,” said Peter.

Lee, whose former life had her working in the entertainment industry, has been working in the salons now for what seems like a life-time. Inspired by her staff, Lee says, “They are amazing, innovative and artistic and have a rarely seen rapport with clients. I find hairdressers to be extremely intuitive and incredibly interesting people.”

Looking to the future, Peter and Lee hope to achieve that perfect balance between work and life, luckily for them they love them both.
