Online Academy
The face of education as we know it is changing; we need to learn more in less time.
More and more salons and spas are becoming computerised, requiring graduating students and apprentices to be able to perform a range of computer, reception and management tasks in addition to their technical knowledge and skills.
Shortcuts has developed the Online Academy to provide up to the minute training in computerised salon and spa procedures.
The Online Academy enables hair and beauty students to become equipped with the latest computer, reception and salon management skills essential for work in todays salons, using software that automates the administration of training. Using a blended learning approach, the Online Academy incorporates traditional learning methods with online learning. This provides students with learning that is:
- Flexible
- Self-paced
- Tailored to suit individual learning styles
- Hands-on
- Motivating, interesting and fun
The Online Academy reduces geographical limitations with lessons able to be delivered over the Internet to anywhere, at any time.
Topic Areas
The online content areas have been mapped against internationally recognised competency standards and include the most important computer, reception and management knowledge and skills including:

Lesson types
Everyone learns differently. Some people are visual learners, others auditory and others are multi-modal. The Online Academy lessons have both audio and non-audio versions to suit the learning style of individual students. The Online Academy accommodates different learning processes and includes three types of lessons:
Show Me
These lessons walk students through a process using audio, text and dynamic screen shots.
Guide Me
These lessons provide an opportunity for students to interact with the software and receive feedback.
Assess Me
These lessons present students with real life scenarios to test their understanding of concepts and ability to perform tasks.
Learning Management System
The Online Academy registers users, tracks courses, records data from learners; and provides reports and assessment results to educators and management.
Educators will have more time, as the time spent on preparation, delivery and assessment will be replaced by the online lessons. The Online Academy will increase contact time for students, as educators become more focused on solving problems and dealing with complex material.
Students will have access to their individual course material via a secure student log-in. They will be able to progress through demonstrations, activities and assessments at their own pace while always keeping track of their performance.
